The time has come for you to begin expanding your family, and while you know that adoption is on your heart, you may be not sure of your next steps. Let us present for you a short primer on adoption to provide you with some guidance for starting your journey of adoption!
3 Types of Adoption:
Foster Care and Foster to Adopt:
Children come into foster care for a variety of reasons and at all ages. Children may remain in a foster home for a short period of time before going back to their biological parents, or they may ultimately become available for adoption and in need of a forever family. Fostering and foster care adoptions are completed through state- or county-run organizations, such as your local Department of Social Services, though some private agencies may also be licensed to work in foster care as well. Although there are some similarities, this process is entirely separate from private adoptions and there is generally no overlap. Carolina Adoption Services is not licensed to approve families for foster care. If you are interested in fostering or adopting a child from foster care, we are happy to give you recommendations for agencies to reach out to.
Private Domestic Adoption:
In the United States, private domestic adoption generally means the adoption of infants who are healthy or have special needs. In these cases, adoption agencies are connected with expectant mothers who are pregnant and considering adoption and seek to match them with families who are seeking to adopt. Carolina Adoption Services has a domestic infant adoption program called CHOICES that is open to North Carolina residents who are interested in this type of adoption. For families who do not live in North Carolina, we also partner with agencies and attorneys across the country to approve families living in South Carolina and Virginia for this type of adoption as well! If you are interested in private domestic adoption, we are always happy to speak with you to find out how we can help!
If you are interested in adopting a child from overseas, Carolina Adoption Services is here to help! Each country will have its own process, timeline, fees, and requirements for parents. Depending on the country, the ages and needs of the children will vary as well. Carolina Adoption Services currently works in eight different countries and regularly partners with other agencies working in other countries across the world. If you are interested in international adoption, know where you would like to adopt from or have no idea, talk to one of our Country Specialists today to learn more!
2 Primary Services:
Carolina Adoption Services can help families living in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia complete the first step of their adoption journey, the home study. The home study is used to approve your family for adoption and must be completed by an agency licensed in your state of residence. If you chose to adopt from one of our adoption programs, we will be there to help you every step of the way! If you choose to adopt from a place where we do not have a program, that is wonderful as well and we look forward to partnering with the placing agency you choose to help bring your child home!
If you are looking to adopt from Armenia, Bulgaria, China, Ghana, Haiti, Moldova, South Korea, Uganda, or through our CHOICES program, look no farther than Carolina Adoption Services! We work with families all across the country – and the world – to complete their adoptions. As the placing agency, we help prepare you to adopt, facilitate matching you with your child, and walk you through all the court processes. If you do not live in one of our three states, we can also help connect you with an agency licensed in your state to complete your home study there. As a small and close-knit agency, we are skilled at giving you the personalized services and support you need as you work to bring your child home.
Carolina Adoption Services, and our subsidiary ABC Adoption Services in Virginia, offers nine different adoption programs and is licensed in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia to complete home studies. If you are interested in adopting – from the United States or anywhere in the world – let us help you get started! No matter what your adoption journey ultimately ends up looking like, we are invested in helping you bring your child home.
