Jin Jin the Dragon $20 suggested donation

Author: Grace Chang (CAS China Facilitator)
Illustrator: Chong Chang

From the moment he hatches out of his golden, thousand-year-old egg, Jin Jin (who has yet to be named) has a problem: he doesn’t know what kind of creature he is and nobody else seems to know either. On the advice of his first friends—Fish, Eagle, and Snake, he sets out to find wise Old Turtle and Crane, who should be able to help. As he embarks on his journey to answer the pressing question of what he is, Jin Jin gets his name, meets many friendly animals, and learns how to read. In the end, through his own curiosity and courage, as well as with a little help from his friends, Jin Jin learns not only what he is, but also what he alone can do!

Beautifully illustrated in Chinese watercolor, these pages present a world that is lush and exotic, yet welcoming and familiar. Perhaps that’s because as children we’re all like Jin Jin, wondering who we are and seeking (without really knowing it) to learn what we alone can do.
Turn the pages and an incredible creature will come to life…

Borya and the Burps $20 suggested donation

Author: Joan McNamara
Illustrator: Dawn W. Majewski

Every year thousands of infants and toddlers are adopted to North America, Western Europe, Australia, and Israel from orphanages in the countries of Eastern Europe. These children most often bring with them nothing but memories—and even those are inaccessible to the youngest of them—of their former lives, caretakers, customs, and languages.

They arrive in a whole new world after a long journey with strangers who are their new parents. The children are anxious, perhaps frightened, of so much that is new and unfamiliar. The parents are excited and overjoyed to have their new sons and daughters home at last after a daunting journey through adoption. The dissonance between these arrival viewpoints can be challenging for both children and their parents.

In Borya and the Burps, author Joan McNamara and illustrator Dawn Majewski try to offer a child’s view of life before adoption and the transition to a forever family in a way that allows parents to talk openly and comfortably about the gains and losses that have been a part of this unique life change.
