About the story:
We first meet Jin Jin the dragon as he hatches, unnamed, from his golden thousand-year-old egg. Immediately, he has a problem: he doesn’t know what kind of creature he is. As he wanders through the forest, he encounters many animals, all of which he has something in common with, but none of them are exactly the same as he is either.

His first friends, Fish, Eagle, and Snake, give the little dragon his name, Jin Jin, meaning golden because that’s what he is. Though he is happy to be named, Jin Jin still does not know what kind of creature he is and his new friends advise him to seek out Old Turtle and Crane, whose mysterious wisdom should be able to help.

As he embarks on his journey, he learns to read, and crosses paths with more friendly creatures: a hare, water buffalo, deer, camel and lion, who help guide him on his way.

Once he’s followed all of nature’s clues, Jin Jin makes his way to a village, where he finds Old Turtle and Crane waiting for him. But before they can reveal what kind of animal he is, he discovers he has powers beyond his imagination as a panicked farmer rushes towards them pleading for help—his rice paddy is dying from severe drought conditions. Suddenly, Jin Jin feels a coolness rising up from his lungs and as he opens his mouth a gush of water comes spraying out all over the rice paddy, saving the farmer’s crop from devastation.

With that, Old Turtle announces it is time to reveal Jin Jin’s identity and out of nowhere a group of familiar animals emerge. These creatures, who helped Jin Jin uncover nature’s clues, were also the clues themselves as myth holds that Chinese dragons are a combination of nine animals: a snake, eagle, fish, deer, hare, water buffalo, camel, lion and lizard. So Jin Jin really was a bit of each of them, but not quite any of them after all, for he is a water-breathing dragon!
